It’s rare to find an agriculture nursery that also breeds and researches variety and rootstock combinations. A longtime Central Valley nursery does just that, focusing on optimizing production. Most growers are familiar with Burchell Nursery, located in Fresno County. Product development and plant breeder John Slaughter said his company takes many things into consideration with its trials at the nursery.

By embarking on an ambitious three-phase project consisting of a screen house, a head house and a greenhouse for insect exclusion and a standalone propagation house in conjunction with Agra Tech, Inc., the Burchell Nursery is poised to start a new chapter in almond and citrus tree production.
The story of growth at Burchell Nursery is astounding and takes place in both Fowler and Oakdale, CA. Since its inception in 1942, the operation has grown from 10,000 trees annually to over 3 million; 1.5 acres to more than 1,000; and from 5,000 square feet of greenhouse space to more than 130,000. This third-generation company is literally growing in front of our eyes and now their current project is taking them to a whole new level.

Editor’s Note: While reading a story last week about the previous day’s Boston Marathon in the Modesto (CA) Bee newspaper, we were surprised to see that a local man, Tom Burchell of Oakdale, had finished with a most respectable 3:33. We wondered if he could be the Burchell from Burchell Nursery, so we texted him, and sure enough, he was one and the same. We asked for a report on the race, but Tom asked if he could wait a week because he had something else to do. Little did we know that he was about to fly across country, back to California, but rather than return home, Burchell was in for a rare, and from the outside, sadomasochistic double dip — another marathon. The following is the report Burchell wrote just before running the Big Sur Marathon this past Sunday, a report that begins with a look back at his 2013 experience when the bombs went off.
